Why a 501(c)(4) operates a network
USIPS exists to preserve open, private, and impartial access to the Internet for the American public. Operating Internet number resources and carrier infrastructure is that purpose put into practice: the network exists to carry lawful traffic impartially, to demonstrate that an operator can act on illegal activity decisively without policing lawful speech, and to keep that infrastructure in hands that third-party pressure cannot move. Network operations are conducted directly by the Society's officers under policies adopted by its board, and every operating policy on this site is an application of the same positions USIPS advocates publicly.
Relationship between usips.org and usips.net
One organization, two sites. usips.org carries advocacy, membership, and publications. usips.net carries the operational record of the USIPS network: identity, routing facts, acceptable use, abuse handling, legal process, and retention. Where the two overlap, the version on this site governs network operations.
